CHP VIN Number

I am looking at a 1961 BN7 with a VIN # that starts with CHP. There is a sticker on the door that lists the CHP VIN number. The number plate on the firewall is missing. It is a California car. I do not want to state the full VIN on this forum. So far I have not been able to determine if this was a Salvage or Total Loss vehicle. Is there any way to use the engine or transmission number to determine the original VIN? The lack of a proper VIN has me worried.

Thanks,
Steve

I had a similar issue. Got the BMHT Certificate based only on
trans, rear, and engine. Took the car to dmv and got the original vin#
re-established. Maybe I just got lucky?
