Tech Inspection
Check the following:
- Brakes – good pedal on first pump, not spongy. Check fluid level.
- Tires – Should be no older than 10 years and have a safe amount of tread.
- Wheels – no more than two broken or missing spokes should be allowed per wheel. No more than four loose spokes should be allowed. Check spokes by running your finger around all the spokes quickly; they should make an even pinging tone. Be sure knock-offs are tight.
- Steering – check that wheel turns freely, "shuck" front wheels to check general condition of front end and wheel bearings.
- Accelerator – check operation and linkage for free movement and check full throttle position to be sure it does not stick.
- Battery – be sure it is tightly secured. Hot post must be taped over.
- Seat Belts – all cars are required to have seat belts. Lap belts at least, shoulder belts are preferred. Check that the driver is securely strapped in before he / she begins the course. The quickest way to lose control of the car is to not stay securely in the driver's seat.
- Loose Items – anything that is not securely mounted or strapped down must be removed.
Spectator Safety
This is obviously your most important concern while running an autocross. In order to keep an interest in the event, the spectators must be allowed close enough to the course to watch it. Spectators should not be allowed 50 feet of the Start/Finish line or any part of the course that is particularly dangerous, such as standing on the outside of a wide corner. Try to keep people in safe areas by the use of ribbons or tape. Sometimes if there are no natural barriers for people to stand behind, vehicles parked along in a row can make a barrier. An adult must carefully watch any small children. Spectators must not be allowed to consume alcohol during the event. One person should be responsible for making sure spectators stay in these designated areas, he / she must be able to stop the event at anytime if a spectator wanders into a non-designated area.
Note: HILLCLIMBS are not covered by our regular insurance policy, although coverage is available as a one-time rider for a substantial fee. If you are planning this type of event or have questions on any of this information, contact Don Klein or any member of the Safety Committee.
